World Language Storytime Honored with the 2020 City Cultural Diversity Award
We are excited to announce that our World Language Storytime program has won the 2020 Cultural Diversity Award! This award was presented by the National League of Cities to eight municipalities across the U.S. Communities are selected by “demonstrating quality and innovation in the many aspects of cultural diversity.” These awards are given to honor communities “leadership in developing creative and effective programs to improve cultural diversity.”
Our World Language Storytime program is offered in eight of the most frequently spoken languages in Arlington. The storytimes are provided by volunteers in Vietnamese, Arabic, French, Chinese, Japanese, and Portuguese, in addition to programs already given in English and Spanish.
This program was established in March 2019 after children’s librarian, Dawn Reyes, saw a need to provide inclusion in the storytime program. These storytimes are made possible through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (2018).
The goal of the program is to create a welcoming environment for everyone in the community. We hope that families enjoy listening to stories in their native language and that young learners learn a little about their culture.
