1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a nationwide challenge that encourages caregivers to regularly read aloud to their children. The challenge helps families bond together through reading and encourages young children to develop a love of reading from an early age. The Arlington Public Library is happy to provide a way for young children to develop early reading skills through a program that is challenging and fun. We are excited to announce another family has completed the program!

Four and half year old, Trinidy and her mother enjoyed reading the books in 100 backpacks and were very excited to receive a certificate to show their completion of the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program.

Ms. Henry shared; “Trinidy enjoyed reading and looking at the pictures to tell a story and loved dinosaurs and space because of the books that were introduced in the program.”  Further, the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten backpack program, helped mom and daughter spend more time reading, talking, singing, writing, and playing together.  Her mother shared “that by reading through all the 1000 books now her daughter recognizes her sight words.”

Families can check out a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten backpack from any library location. Each backpack has 10 fun picture books, chosen specially for young children. There are 100 backpacks to choose from, so if a family checks out each bag one time, they'll have borrowed 1,000 books. Browse the bags in person at any location or click here to see them online.  The Arlington Public Library also offers 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten in Spanish.  All the fun and benefits of reading with Spanish books specifically chosen for young readers.

There is always time for your family to complete the challenge. Ask for a log at any library location or download the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten app for iPhone or Android. When a child reaches landmarks (example read through 10 backpacks) bring their log to the library to receive a fun sticker.  When your family finishes all 1,000 books, share the news with your local librarian to receive a special certificate of completion! Each certificate marks a special accomplishment for young readers, but also celebrates lots of time spent reading and learning with family.

This program is made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act.
