As of Jan. 30, there have been over 8,200 coronavirus cases and at least 171 confirmed deaths. The virus which originated in Wuhan, Hubei, China has now spread globally to 18 countries and has been declared as a global health emergency by the World Health Organization. The city of Wuhan, which houses over 11 million people, is currently on lockdown to prevent further spread of the virus.

As of Jan. 30, there have been six confirmed cases of the virus in the United States. The U.S. is sending a team from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to China to assist with the outbreak. According to the CDC, the virus causes “mild to moderate upper-respiratory tract illnesses, like the common cold.” Symptoms include a runny nose, headache, cough, sore throat, and fever.
