Teen Volunteer Guidelines

Approved Teen Volunteer Guidelines

Once approved, volunteers will train with Library staff, and complete tasks as assigned on behalf of the Arlington Public Library. These tasks can range from book wrangling, Adopt-a-Category, shelf-reading, and assisting Library staff with programming.

It is recommended that approved volunteers set a schedule of around 2-3 hours per week to ensure they have enough volunteer work to fill the time. The Arlington Public Library is generally unable to accommodate volunteers who wish to work more than 4-6 hours per week.

The Arlington Public Library reserves the right to reassign volunteers to other tasks as needed if there is no volunteer work to be done in an assigned task. Additionally, Arlington Public Library reserves the right to end a volunteer’s scheduled time early if there is no volunteer work to be done.

All volunteers will receive credit for the time they spend volunteering, not the total amount of time spent in the library. For example, if a volunteer is at the library from 4-6 PM, but volunteers from 4-5 PM, they will only receive credit for one service hour.

If there is an hour requirement with a deadline, the Arlington Public Library cannot guarantee that volunteers will be able to earn all their service hours at the Library.

Failure to volunteer over a period of three weeks without communication with your Public Services Coordinator or Resident Librarian may result in dismissal of your volunteer spot, so it can be assigned to another volunteer. All volunteers for the Arlington Public Library are required to abide by all City and Library policies during their volunteer work. Failure to abide by any City or Library policy may result in an immediate termination of the volunteer relationship and being prohibited from volunteering with any City of Arlington department.
